![]() The rule is simple if there is a supply of food around your property then expect to have some chipmunks moving in as neighbors. They can exist alongside man in parks, wooded lots or in our yards. As with other animals, chipmunks have been able to take advantage of suburban areas. Chipmunks exist in all 48 of the main states of America and seem to be thriving more now than ever. They are active during the day and move around cautiously and tentatively. The eastern species seems to be more likely to have more than one litter a year, although either species may have several if the conditions are right.Ĭhipmunks are ground dwellers. Gestation usually takes one month and litters may have 2-8 young. Both species breed in the spring and summer months. Either can hibernate, but western chipmunks seem more likely to stay active all year. Both are small only reaching 8-10 inches at maturity. Eastern chipmunks have three dark stripes while the western species has five. The two main species are the eastern and western chipmunk. These dorsal stripes vary with the species. Their bodies are tan/brown with dark or light stripes running down their back. It may be nosing its way around an open screen and be drawn to something enticing on the kitchen counter. Occasionally, a chipmunk will find itself inside a structure by accident. Chipmunks have also been known to spread diseases such as plague, salmonella, and hantavirus. And, if rodents are bringing in fleas, and ticks, you may find yourself dealing with secondary issues such as an infestation of fleas, and the potential of Lyme disease. If you find yourself dealing with mites, ticks or fleas, they might not have come in on Rover or Fluffy. Other issues with chipmunks getting in on purpose include the fact that these animals can carry parasites in their fur. Not only can this be unsightly, but you may find yourself paying more for cooling and heating bills. And, if the hole they got in through is a little tight, they will simply chew it larger, and possibly make other holes so that coming and going is easier. They will chew on wood, insulation, plastic, sheetrock, wiring, and anything else they feel like chewing on. Chipmunks, like all rodents, need to constantly chew on things to wear down their ever-growing incisors. When it does, it can damage surrounding items with its chewing and gnawing behaviors. Occasionally, a chipmunk will settle into an attic, wall void, or some other secluded spot inside a home. Either way, they can cause a bit of trouble. And sometimes chipmunks get in by accident. Although these animals are usually content to stay outside, sometimes a chipmunk will find its way into a nice cozy attic and decide it is a pretty good place to set up housekeeping. No matter how cute these little rodents are–and they are rodents–they can be quite problematic if they get into man-made structures. But, not everything is cute about chipmunks. There is no denying that chipmunks are absolutely adorable. And their cheeks are amazing! Did you know that a chipmunk can hold upwards of ten almonds in its cheeks at one time? Chipmunks will squeeze so many nuts into their cheek pouches that it makes their heads look misshapen and uneven. Their tiny feet are like little human hands. They are tiny little critters who scamper and dash. There really is no arguing against this point. ![]()
